This is our traditional in-person Jazz Workshop experience open to students aged 13 to adults.  All participants are assigned and placed in small combo settings that will explore the world of jazz improvisation and jazz standards over the course of the week.

Vocal Jazz Workshop

This is a new program for 2022. A three-day vocal jazz workshop that includes vocal ensemble, vocal technique, and a chance to work as a jazz vocal soloist with a professional rhythm section with some of Vancouver’s finest musicians.

Workshop Combo Classes

                  

August 9 – 14, 2022

This program gives musicians of all levels the opportunity to explore and deepen their understanding of jazz improvisation and advance their practical ability in the context of ensemble performance. Vocals and all instruments are welcome! This year the in-person workshop is open to students 13 years and older as well as adults.

There will be limited enrolment, and there will be a video audition of participants to assess their ability. 

Each combo will receive the same amount/type of classroom time/faculty instruction, as well as access to all online program components.

Our in-person combo classes will also have access to online resources such as instructional course documents, online play-along tracks, and more  These will help enhance the total experience.

 

Early Bird Price – $525.00 until July 20
– after July 20, then $575.00

The Red Barn at Southlands

Come Join Us!


Our in-person combo rehearsals will be in large spaces that will allow for adequate social distancing and room to rehearse. The workshop will take place at the Red Barn at Southlands and other nearby spaces that are large enough to accommodate this.

Masterclasses


Each day in early afternoon combo participants will take part in a masterclass that will examine a particular jazz style or jazz improv concept that will be explored with the group in detail. 

In Person Combo Classes


Each combo will rehearse in-person with coaching from one of our faculty over 8 two-hour sessions in total, as per their individual combo schedule.

 

Festival Concerts


Workshop participants will have admission to festival concerts held during the Festival weeks..

 

Online Workshop

                  

August 2 – 5, 2022

This year we are offering a streamlined online Jazz Workshop experience to students aged 12 to adults, where each student will have access to online coaching, masterclasses, repertoire classes,
ear training, and more!

Over the course of the week, there will be typically
two online sessions each day that online participants
will participate in

  • 9:30 am – 12:30 pm (Pacific time) each day with two
    30-minute private sessions between 1:30 – 3 pm
    during the week.
  • Students will record themselves each day and
    submit recordings for evaluation and feedback.
  • discuss styles and genre using repertoire examples
  • eat training and theory sessions

 

Early Bird Price – $325.00 until July 20
– after July 20 – $375.00

The Red Barn at Southlands

play-a-long tracks


Participants will work with play-along rhythm section tracks recorded by our Jazz Festival faculty. We will provide charts and other resources for these tracks. These workshop selections will be used in our Repertoire classes.

Masterclasses


Each day there will be at least one masterclass topic for all the participants of the online workshop. These cover a variety of topics including beginning to advanced jazz theory, jazz history, transcribing & analyzing tunes, solo strategy, and more. For all instruments.

Repertoire Classes


Our faculty team will lead you through our camp workshop selections and provide you with specific instructions, tips and coaching on how to play and solo on each track.

Q & A


There will be scheduled online sessions where participants can ask the faculty questions, or seek additional guidance.

Vocal Jazz Workshop

Come discover your own artistry, creativity, and jazz vocalist self in a supportive community of like-minded participants and instructors!

Through ensemble singing, solo opportunities, and a variety of exciting musical tutorials for improvisation, ear training, rhythm, and theory, you will be inspired to take your singing to the next level!  Age 13 and up, adults are welcome.

There will be limited enrolment, and there will be a video placement audition of participants so that we can create the best musical experience possible.

VOCAL JAZZ BROCHURE

Join us at Southlands


Our vocal jazz sessions will be held at the Red Barn on the Southlands Development in Tsawwassen BC. The Barn is a modern new facility that will allow us to rehearse in a safe. socially distanced environment while observing all Covid related protocols

Covering the basics



We will start each day with vocal and body warmups. Part of each day will be spent on sight singing and ear training. Also we will be going through individual song repertoire that will be arranged for you in the best keys for your individual voice.

In-person Jazz Choir


We will be custom tailoring some group vocal jazz arrangements to fit the group of singers we have to work with (that is why you will be providing some audition materials for us!).

 

Faculty rhythm section


Workshop participants will have the opportunity to work with our professional faculty rhythm section and teaching assistants to help guide you through the wonders of singing vocal charts (heads) and experimenting with vocal jazz improvisation.
